Workshop Goal
The goal of this workshop is: Present, review and discuss Ethical Issues working in Corrections, Community Corrections, Substance Use Disorder treatment; Social Services.


Objectives

  • An introduction to the foundations of psychotherapeutic ethics, including ethics in real life, ethics in theories and codes, cultural context, ethical decision making, and moral courage.
  • An exploration of common sources of ethical problems and pitfalls, including: pseudoscience, ethical fallacies, ethical judgement errors, language and rationalizations
  • In-depth examination of issues, including sexual attraction to clients, digital therapy.


Workshop Description

This workshop will be hands-on exploration of practical and creative approaches to the responsibilities, challenges, and opportunities encountered by case managers and counselors working in corrections, community corrections, social services. We’ll touch on the many changes and difficulties created by new technologies like electronic health records, videoconferencing, and texting. We will explore “real life” scenarios and discuss them in small group exercises.


Presenter:  Mark Groves
Mark is the MCA Liaison; 2018 and 2023 President for the Minnesota Corrections Association (MCA).  He is currently a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor with the Minnesota State Services for the Blind. Prior to this position, he was the Division Director of Rehabilitative and Veterans Services for the Volunteers of America Minnesota with overall supervision of 85 employees for two Residential Reentry Facilities serving 132 Federal Bureau of Prisons and Minnesota Department of Corrections offenders reentering the community.  He worked at the Minnesota Department of Corrections as the Facilities Reentry Coordinator providing oversight to all reentry program elements in Minnesota Department of Corrections (DOC) facilities planning, implementing and managing reentry programs and initiatives at all DOC correctional facilities.


He has a Master of Education from the University of Wisconsin-Superior and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Minnesota.  He is a Minnesota Licensed Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor (LADC).  Certified Global Career Development Facilitator (GCDF).  National Institute of Corrections Offender Workforce Development Facilitator (OWDS) Master Trainer.  Motivational Interviewing Master Trainer.
